A scenic drive from Anchorage, at your own pace

You do not need to fill every hour to enjoy the road out of Anchorage. Choose a direction, check current conditions and decide how much time you want to spend outside the vehicle as well as in it.

Consider the Turnagain Arm corridor

A drive south can offer changing coastal and mountain views, but keep attention on the road and use designated stopping places. Check conditions before departure and choose a modest turnaround point if you have a fixed return time. Never stop in a traffic lane for a photograph.

Make viewpoints optional

A pullout may be full, access may be restricted or weather may obscure the view. Continue to a safe, authorised stopping place rather than forcing the original plan. The quality of the day does not depend on visiting every marked point.

Check roads beyond the main route

An appealing side road may be gravel, privately controlled or subject to seasonal limits. Confirm that your intended route is open and permitted by your rental agreement. A map recommendation alone is not approval.

Save daylight and energy for the return

Choose a distance that leaves a comfortable margin for meals, changing weather and traffic. If you are newly arrived or tired, a shorter drive is a sensible choice.

Return with the next step settled

Before the evening, check tomorrow’s weather, fuel needs and travel arrangements. A scenic drive is most rewarding when it fits into a trip that still has room for rest.
