Plan around comfortable stages
Use fewer overnight moves and allow time for meals, toilets and breaks outside the car. A route that looks efficient on paper may feel very different with tired children and wet jackets to organise.
Arrange restraints before arrival
Share each child’s needs when asking about suitable seats. Confirm the available restraint, its suitability and collection arrangements in advance; adding a request is not a substitute for checking what will be provided. Passenger totals should include children.
Leave useful things within reach
Keep layers, water, snacks and essentials accessible without unloading the whole vehicle. Secure bags and loose items, and avoid stacking luggage where it blocks the driver’s view.
Give each day an easy alternative
Weather can turn an outdoor plan into a short visit rather than a full afternoon. Keep an alternative near your accommodation and avoid treating a changed plan as a failed day.
Finish before everyone is exhausted
Leave a realistic margin before an evening check-in or a transport connection. If driving between locations would make the trip harder, consider a private transfer for that stage and a rental for the days when you want to explore independently. Confirm each service separately.
